Wica, with a single c was developed by pioneers in the 1950’s, based on at least two witchcraft traditions and other magical societies. At a time when witchcraft was just becoming able to be legally practiced in the UK. It was a major development and took what had been largely a distributed and quite varied country practice to create a form available to more people. The publication of details allowed far more to understand and for this path within the craft to grow. Witchcraft had existed before wica, but being illegal it had devolved into a large number of paths, and few records exist showing the history of each. Much older books and magical texts you will discover are available to you. Since then, a number of variations have occurred, further modifying, or refining it and over time the name wica has changed to the old English word Wicca, which is the word that the word witchcraft developed from. Neither Wicca or witchcraft is associated with the Christian Satan, and this does not exist within our traditions. Therefore a Satanist of a negative Christian, not anything to do with Wicca or witchcraft. Now there are very many types of Wicca, all valid, and improved or advanced versions developed further from that, which was produced by the wica pioneers. In the USA Wicca is a recognised religion, and some now think of Wicca as being the over classification covering all forms of witchcraft, rather than a sub set, but many traditional witchcraft paths say they are not a part of Wicca, but Wicca is a part of witchcraft. Although to some this may seem a little like a chicken and egg question, we accept Wicca as being a group of paths within witchcraft, although witchcraft itself is so wide, it is nearly impossible to define what it is. The word witch means different things to different people, while Wiccan is a more understood term. |
