Home Up Basics Magic The new coven

Magic, spells, potions, ritual.............

This is perhaps what many think of when they first hear of witchcraft, but in the same way as sex is only a relatively small amount of time of every week in a loving relationship, these activities only occupy a small percentage of the week of the average witch.

So what is magic.

To the traditional witch magic is a fact, a straight line with full understanding and explanations within science at one end and miricles at the other, around half way is conjuring and craft skills where the person practicing them understands the science behind them but others do not. Also around this point is nee discoveries, things which yesterday were a part of magic, but since discovery have become a part of science. beyond this is often old knowledge mislaid waiting to be discovered and beyond this knowledge held by a few but not by everyone.

At points along this line, on the blind side of discovery to most is craft skills, knowledge of how to make things happen, where we know what happens but may not be able to say why, and beyond this things that will work some times.

Where the scientist does not understand he creates a theory (guess) and short of a better guess this becomes the accepted science for the time being. facts will be looked for to support this theory. papers written, and the standing of the authors attached to the reputation of the theory.

Within the craft, we don't have any of this, if we know something works but we do not know why, we can accept this, when we make notes, journals, books of shadow, we record what we did and the outcome, the search is not for evidence to support a theory, but just to understand cause and effect. Experience and wisdom are interrelated, and shared experience often gives greater wisdom, without the need for anyone to defend a theory or feel attacked because someone else's experience provides a new angle or view of things.

Few craft members will get involved with scientific trials, and often the results are effected by a vast array of variables, many of which could not be reproduced within a laboratory. In addition we have no desire to press our views on others, if they do not believe, then we can accept that.

For the new witch starting out, often they do seek some reassurance that magic is real, and although most are suitably impressed all they experience generally is the application of knowledge that is beyond their current understanding.

Some of the leading witches can do magnificent tricks, Aqua for example a couple of years ago at a meeting in Scotland took the group to the coast and walked out onto the water of the bay, with many being able to photograph the experience, so could not have been mass hypnosis or the like. He has also been able to introduce people of all religions to the person in who they believe, at a level where they have been able to experience there presence and carry our discussions with them.

Many witches can with a little training do out of body flights and see things which they can later check to be correct and research at least some of their past lives.

Herbal cures is knowledge, and modern medicine is largely built upon this.

Yes we have wands and yes we use ritual; to seek the help or advice of the spirit in some form, and yes much of what we do is secret, restricted knowledge, but not because we are not prepared to share it with you, more a case of making sure it is used responsibly.
